A Letter to My Father Explaining Why I Will Not Study The Course He Chose for Me at The University by : 2:51 pm On May 15, 2018

Your father insists that you must study medicine at the University, but you have an entirely different course in mind. Write a letter to him explaining why you prefer this other course and why he should allow you to make your own choice.

I’m pleased to write this letter to you. I hope it will get to you in good health. How are my mother, siblings and friends in the village? I have the belief that everyone is in a perfect state of health.

The main reason why I am writing this letter to you is to bare my mind to you on the topic we had the last time I came home. Then you insisted that I must study medicine at the university.

Dad, as I told you earlier, my choice is not medicine but law. The legal profession has been my favorite since my childhood.

I need to appeal to you to allow me to actualize my dreams as far as my proposed career is concerned. I don’t like to be a doctor for whatever reason. First, you know that I’m naturally timid and cannot stand the sight of blood.

Besides, I don’t like having contact with the sick especially when they are patients at the hospital. You remember the last time we had to visit uncle Bayo at the General Hospital in Ibadan, I waited for you at the security post at the gate. I did not see my uncle until he was discharged from the hospital.

Moreover, the medical profession is not only time-demanding but also very strenuous. For instance, one needs to study close to eight years to get qualified as a doctor.

But my favorite profession requires me to spend only four years in the university before I go for the national service. The law profession gives room for creativity. You know very much, Dad, that I am an art student. I do very well in English language, literature, Government and other art subjects. And you equally are aware that I am very weak in science subjects. Without a good mastery of physics, Chemistry and Biology, one cannot cope with medicine in the university.

Please Dad, make it possible for me to realize my life ambition of being a lawyer. I will feel fulfilled if you allow me to accomplish just this.

My siblings can study medicine when their time comes. Ade, especially, is science-inclined. I know he will be a good doctor as you know.

Moreover, Dad, I will like you to know that if you insist on my studying medicine, I might turn out to be a frustrated man in my later years as a man. I believed you will not like this to be my portion.

Finally, I appeal to you in the name of the Almighty God to allow me to study me preferred course which is law.
