“…Can you imagine that? As tired as I was, I had to go to Chinedu’s school to get him” Amina complained to her friend Rosemary.
“Calm down! I know how upsetting it is, but you know that is exactly what your in-laws want you to be, upset! But the truth is that I just can’t understand your mother in-law! How can she be so mean to her own blood all in the name of getting at you?” Rosemary asked.
“I don’t know o! Rosemary! If this woman can do this to Chinedu then she can kill me o!” “Haba! What did I do wrong? Just because I married her son! Kai! I can’t even discuss this with my parents! They had their misgivings about Emeka when he came asking for my hand in marriage, how do I go and tell them all these now!” Amina lamented.
“It is okay! You will do no such thing! Nobody is going to tell them anything. Just be patient, God will see you through this!”
“God should see me o! He should! What have I done to deserve this?” Amina sobbed. “Is it a crime to marry someone that is not from the same tribe as you? Aren’t we all the same from one country?”
Rosemary moved closer to her and patted her on the back. “It is okay! You’ll see, everything will definitely turn out fine! Have you heard from Emeka yet?” she asked.
Amina shook her head from side to side. Turning to her friend she said “that is another problem my friend! A very big one!”
“How?” Rosemary said.
“Since the last time I spoke to Emeka like I told you, he does not pick my calls. And when he manages to, he does not sound comfortable talking to me. Lately, his phone is always on voice mail when I call. Can you believe that?” she began to sob again. “Rosemary, I smell a rat! A big fat one! With the way his mother and sisters are behaving, it is as if they are onto a big secret that I am not into!”
“Come on! Amina! I do not think there is any reason for Emeka to treat you that way! I am sure you are just imagining things!”
“Imagining things? Look, my friend! I am not a baby! I am telling you something fishy is going on. I can just feel it! It is unlike Emeka to keep silent for this long. 2 whole months no call from him and he is refusing to take mine! To rub salt on the injury, my mother in-law confirmed that he spoke with her just last week! I could swear she had a smirk on her face as she gave the good news to her daughters when she knew I was within earshot. What other evidence is there to prove Emeka and his family are up to something funny!”
Rosemary heaved a big sigh, she thought to herself, “I think Amina is right! Since when Emeka went to America he had been faithful in contacting her friend but had suddenly changed about some 6 months ago and things have been going from bad to worse. What on earth can this man be up to?” she mused.
“… Rosemary! What are you thinking about now?” Amina asked.
“Sorry, I was deep in thought” she answered. “What were you saying?”
“I was saying do you think Emeka has settled down with someone else since he is having trouble with his papers?” Amina asked her friend.
“Kai! Amina! How could you think of something like that?” Rosemary said rolling her eyes. Rising to her feet, she turned towards her friend. “Look here friend, there is nothing for you to worry about! I am sure Emeka will have a good reason for not answering your calls all this while. And as for settling down with someone else, how would he do that? You guys are married! He knows better than that! So relax your mind! Everything will turn out just fine, you’ll see!”
“If you say so.” Amina said.
“So, do I get you the drink now? She asked a worried looking Amina.
“Okay” mumbled Amina.
“Fine! While am at it, kindly slot in the video cassette I gave to you. I won’t take long” she hurried into her kitchen to get the drinks
