What makes the app to use a lot of data is because, it auto-downloads and plays all the images and videos posted by the people or hashtags that you are following.

It does not give you the opportunity to choose which video you want to play and which one you don’t. This is the major reason why this app uses a lot of data.

Now to reduce excessive data usage on Instagram, all you have to do is to use Instagram on a third-party browser like Opera. On Opera, you will have to click on the video that you want to play before it starts playing. Through this, you will be able to reduce excessive data usage on Instagram because you will probably not play all the videos sent by all the people you are following.

Another way to reduce data usage is to tick Use Less Data on Instagram. Tap on settings, under cellular data usage, you will find that.
