This is to inform all JAMB candidates offering Igbo Language that the new Syllabus for 2019/2020 Jamb exam is out. Candidates can download or view the pdf format here.

The Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination syllabus for Igbo Language is designed to prepare the candidates for the Board’s examination.

 The following are what this syllabus strives to achieve:

  1. Communicate effectively in Igbo;
  2. Analyse issues in the Language;
  3. Interpret and explain figurative and idiomatic expression in Igbo;
  4. Apply Igbo literature to their daily life experiences and to demonstrate Igbo cultural values.

Candidates should be able to:

  1. differentiate between standard Igbo and dialects.
  2. use standard Igbo in their writings.

ESSAY(EDEMEDE) JAMB 2019/2020 Igbo Language Syllabus

Candidates should be able to:

  1. identify the basic principles of essay writing.
  2. use of words and expressions appropriate to a particular topic.

iii. differentiate between different essay types.

  1. describe the characteristics of essay types.
  2. compare different types of essay.
  3. criticize other people’s essays.

(a) Basic principles of essay writing: introduction, body and conclusion.

(b) Basic essay types and their characteristics:

  1. Narrative (Akọmakọ).
  2. Descriptive and expository (Nkọwa na Nkọwami).

iii. Argumentative (Mgbagha/Ar?marụụka) Speech making (Ekwumekwu).

  1. Letter Writing (Edemleta).
  2. Dialogue (Mkparịtaụka).

GRAMMAR (ỤTỌASỤSỤ) JAMB 2019/2020 Igbo Language Syllabus

OBJECTIVES

  1. differentiate between grammatical categories.
  2. identify parts of speech and their functions.

iii. differentiate between types of affixes and their functions.

  1. determine types of morphemes and their functions.
  2. identify words, phrases, clauses, sentences and their functions.

(a) Parts of speech (Nkejiasụsụ):Nominals (Mkpọaha), verbs (ngwaa), adjectives (nkọwa), adverbs (nkwuwa), affixes (mgbakwunye), enclitics (nsokwunya),dg.

(b) The structure, types and functions of the morpheme (Ndokọ, ụdị na ọrụ mọfịm) Free & bound (nnọọrọonwe na ndabe).

  1. The word (mkpụrụokwu).
  2. The phrase (nkebiokwu).

iii. The clause (nkebiahịrị) nominal, relative adverbial (kemkpọaha na kenkwuwa).

  1. The sentence (ahịrịokwu) simple (mfe), compound (ukwu), complex (mgbagwọ, dg).
