Midnight Frenzy

He paced around nervously, with his arms in akimbo, feet shuffling, eyes reeling in pain, body terribly gaunt out of anxiety. Now and then he would sit down in the upholstered armchair beside him which was totally comforting and typically an armchair crafted for relaxation. But the truth here was that the armchair could not have in anyway bring his anxiety to a halt, rather it just reminded him the resemblance of his home decor. He had similar armchair smartly designed to beautify his parlor particularly. No! He couldn’t have thought about his home decor when he was emotionally traumatized. The thought of his home decor quickly left his mind, just like it came. He would have seem more mentally deranged if he had sat on the ground, and quite oddly he attempted it, showing how scarred at heart and mind he had become. He would not even stay one place, making the situation seem worse. One wondered if pacing around anxiously would give him a thought on how to go about the challenge. It seemed the more he walked to and fro the balcony, the more his pains increased inordinately.

At a point, he fixed his eyes on the television, though his mind was somewhere else. This came to mean that eyes were just part of the sense organs needed for physical seeing which totally become useless when a man is engaged in thought. His eyes were fixed on the television but honestly he wasn’t watching the movie being played. The plasma T.V hung on the wall with D.V.D and D.S.T.V electronics on it’s top. The presence of T.V created comfort and consolation among the patients in the hospital because some of the movie watched were comic and mind-relaxing. But today quite fortunately the movie being played by Africa Magic was one that is life changing.

“In the movie that stares Ikenga Azu, a widely known philanthropist and his wife, Orabugo , so many odd things happen to Ikenga. He is a business magnate popularly known in his village for his philanthropic and magnanimous exercise. He helps people and as well sacrifices his time to people. He is an epitome of humility so to say. It is unfortunate, this big bag experiences life frustrating challenges.

It all start when Ikenga’s wife gives birth through operation. His wife had never given birth with operation until now which is her maiden experience. Sadly the doctor that operated on her carelessly if not unprofessionally leaves a tissue in her stomach which makes her totally weak and deadly. When it is discovered, the doctor says that if they had waited for less than twenty four hours, the woman would have died in exsanquination- loss of blood. This is a very big challenge for Ikenga and without wasting much time, he flies her to Britain where he thinks more capable and professional doctors operate. It is irritating or worse still, life threatening to have unqualified doctors in a very rich country like this, observes Ikenga. What they do with the money they tap from the oil bloom and other natural resources leaves Ikenga wandering if he were possibly residing in the most corrupted country in Africa. “They go about taking in hundreds of medical students every year in each university, while only few would graduate. Isn’t that ridiculous?” Ikenga once scoffs. “And none of these graduated doctors is comparable with English standard. Dark country!” Ikenga muses and as well becomes dismayed in the sight of horrible situation that tear the country into pieces.

Not long he flies his wife abroad, his sheep filled up with goods sinks on it’s way back to the country. This series of challenges reduces Ikenga to nothing and this makes him underestimate the power of God and inwardly his existence. Much sorrowfully his wife is able to come back from the money donated by his acquittance. Not even his fellow business colleagues try helping him out when he is in need unlike him. For all these he baptised the world the most wicked place to be and even hate the day he started putting smiles on the faces of people through his “operation feed the hungry and embrace the destitute.”

That is similarly what Godwin was passing through. This was the third time his wife was being operated on in same child birth. The first operation left his wife excessively bleeding and no doubt it was the incompetence and lukewarm exercise of the doctor that was responsible for the bleeding. Unable to stop ( The bleeding) He took her to a different hospital which after wasting their time accepted they could not handle the situation.

It was already midnight and the third doctor was doing the work keeping Godwin in total panic of what might be the aftermath of the operation. It would be a lonely world to live in if his wife gave up the ghost on the process. As certainly the relationship was built on an undiluted love and Godwin may even die out of heart attack if the doctor comes out right now and tells him their well known sad phrase ” Sir , we are sorry…” . It would tear him inconsolably if actually he will survive it.

No one was talking of the baby given birth to as the life of the mother was given priority to. Only God knew what would become of this baby after being abandoned unintentionally and only fed with milk which according to elders made a baby stupid when it grew up. For seven days now the mother had not set eyes on the baby owing to the fact that she was totally unconscious. It was only God that gave her courage to continue especially when she recited Psalm 31:24 ” Be strong and let your heart take up courage , all ye who wait for the Lord” This verse reeled on her mind and she was happy reciting it having discovered how strong she would be each time she recalls the verse.

He was already feeling sleepy after waiting for whopping hours for the doctor to come and wouldn’t. Immediately he heard a foot step, he jumped up to his feet and luckily it was doctor with grinning face. He rushed him, clenched his fists on his arms and asked how it went, even though he had seen the doctor smiling but wasn’t rest assured if it was a smile in reflection to the success of the operation.

” Congratulations, she made it.” Doctor said and unknowingly removed his fists from his in a cordial manner.

” I can’t believe this” Godwin shouted in joy.

” And please next time, be careful to whom you take your wife to especially for operation. There are many quack doctors out there and they are the reason the lives of you and I are in danger” Doc, advised.

Godwin lately discovered he had no money on him to pay the hospital bill and subsequently spent his life borrowing to discharge his lovely wife.
