If you read this history, you will begin to appreciate what technology has done for us. The first printing press in Nigeria was established in the year 1854 by Rev. Henry Townsend, a Presbyterian Church missionary. He published the first newspaper in Nigeria in 1859, five years after the printing press was established. Henry TownsendTownsend was an Anglican missionary from England. He was ordained in England in 1842 Townsend established the first printing press in Nigeria. He was a missionary, he came to Africa first in Sierra lone after which he was transferred to the Yoruba mission. He spent 21 years in Abeokuta where he wrote several hymns in Yoruba and aided in the compilation of Crowther’s Yoruba primer.
