But did you know that before now, it was hard to get access to news in Nigeria? If you read this history, you will begin to appreciate what technology has done for us.

The first printing press in Nigeria was established in the year 1854 by Rev. Henry Townsend, a Presbyterian Church missionary. He published the first newspaper in Nigeria in 1859, five years after the printing press was established. The name of the newspaper was in Yoruba “Iwe Irohin Fun Awon Ara Egba Ati Yoruba” translated into English as “Newspaper in Yoruba for the Egba and Yoruba people.”

The British missionaries played a major role in the development of a printing press in Nigeria. They helped with the development of education which paid the way for the advancement of the newspaper. Education helped people to learn how to read and write. Without Education, society would not be able to read newspapers.
