Rabbit rearing is one of the most fast growing and profitable agricultural venture in Africa especially Kenya, as a female rabbit (doe) can give birth to approximately 4-9 rabbits, and also their gestation period lasts for just one month (30 days) before giving birth. Adding to that, rabbits are also good sources of meat (white meat) which is approved medically. Rabbit urine are discovered to be one of the best source of organic fertilizer and pesticides. This has brought to the existence of big agro-allied industries where rabbit farmers can sell rabbit urine for money or exchange it for already processed fertilizers. Rabbit’s droppings is a good source of manure for crop plants.
Below are importance, uses and possible income streams from rabbit farming:
-As earlier said, rabbit urine and droppings can be sold, used as fertilizers, manure, and pesticides.
-Rabbit skin and fur can be sold and used to make clothes, shoes, belts and wears.
-Rabbit bone can be use to produce; buttons, glue, combs, and brushes. Large quantities can be used to produce; charcoal, and to purify sugar and can be sold to school for practicals and can also be added to other farm animal diet as bone meals.
-Rabbits meats can be sold as they are good sources of protein. Rabbits are recorded to have the most nutritious milk.
-Rabbits are very clean and friendly animals and can be sold as pets.
NB: they should no be kept around dogs and cats.
-Oil can also be extracted from rabbits to produce; cooking oil, soaps, and detergents.
-Dead rabbits are also useful as they serve as; fertilizers, food for animals like; dog, cats, catfish e.t.c. And many more added advantages.
Rabbits are very useful as they can generate multiple streams of income for you.
I have been a rabbit farmer and consultant for some years now and i must say, rabbit farming has alot of benefits. Marketing or selling of rabbits and it products are easy, provided you have good marketing and networking strategies.
I remember supplying some numbers of rabbits to A.B.U, mando, agricultural division for practicals and since then I’ve been geting referrals from them, when some one come to buy from them and they dont have, they are quickly referred to me. The key to making quick sales is having a marketing strategy.
