Ikorodu Local Government,
3rd May, 1990.
The Honorable Commissioner,
Ministery of Agriculture,
THE THREAT OF PESTS TO OUR CROPS
I, on behalf of the entire farming community of Ikorodu Local Government, hereby write to inform you about the unexpected invasion of a swarm of locust-like pests which have been causing havoc this past one week.
This community as you are away of is an agrarian one and we pride ourselves as committed farmers who have been contributing immensely to the annual rich agricultural harvests in the state. Because of the good early rains of this year, we are expecting bountiful harvest two months from now. This beautiful and rewarding realisation of our dreams will be thwarted if the menace of these pests is not curbed and controlled with concerted efforts of the local farmers and your ministry. The pests eat up leafy plants and even attempt to eat up fruits.
The uncontrolled invasion of these pests will affect us adversely in a number of ways. We may not be able to pay our taxes, rates and levies promptly. Secondly, it will reduce our harvests and thereby threaten our saleable produce and destroy the chances of preserving some quantities in the food storage silos which your ministry has just built. So far our local efforts at controlling the pests have not achieved much because they are limited individualistic solutions.
I kindly request you to use your good offices and resources to send for our immediate assistance, pesticides with some equipment and effective spraying materials. After the pests must have been eradicated, we require your ministry's experts to teach us the farmers how to apply the chemicals, teach us how to prevent future occurrence and/or minimise their impact if they invade our farm sites again. We will appriciate your assistance in this regard.
