Why Chelsea may struggle to score much goals this season. by temitopehleb: 9:03 am On August 8, 2018 |
Chelsea new manager Maurizio Sarri is a coach who is known at Napoli for playing a strategy which is based on superb attacking football and having possesion of the ball. He play in 4-3-3 formation, having four men at the back, three in midfield and three forwards. In 2016/2017 Serie A season, his Napoli team scored a league high of 94 goals. Now here is why Chelsea FC may find it difficult scoring lots of goals. Looking at Chelsea defender, Marcos Alonso who played as a wing back since he joined them two seasons ago under former coach Antonio Conte who uses 3-5-2, 3-4-3 formations, he was given the opportunity to roam around the opposition box when Chelsea are with the ball and from there Alonso contributed to 13 league goals with 3 coming from free kicks. But with Sarri’s 4 man defence, Alonso will play as Left Back and won’t have the license to be bursting into opposition box as he used to, so as not to get Chelsea defence exposed. In the three man midfield, It’s going to be Kante, Jorginho and Kovacic (imminent arrival). Focusing on the statistics of these three players in the last three league seasons, Kante scored three in EPL, Jorginho two in Serie A and Kovacic with one in La liga. So it simply means these trio scored just six goals combined in last three seasons. Kovacic will be the attacking midfielder, but he’s not the type of midfielder who has eye for goals. Unlike Marek Hamsik who played as an attacking midfielder for Sarri’s Napoli team in the three man midfield who by himself scored 12 Serie A goals in 2016/2017 season. In 2016/2017 Seria A season, Dries Mertens, Jose Callejon and Lorenzo Insigne played as the three forwards in Sarri’s Napoli team, with Mertens scoring 28 goals, Insigne 18 goals and Callejon 14 goals. Now looking at Chelsea three forwards, the starters are likely to be Hazard, Morata and Willian if no new forward is being added before the transfer closes. Hazard till now is a player who has never scored 20 league goals in a season for Chelsea since 2012. Although he has been the best Premier League player since then, but he needs to improve his scoring abilities. Willian is an inconsistent player who has never scored double digit league goals for Chelsea. Morata is going to lead the line for them, a player who was so wasteful last season. He only managed 11 goals in 31 league games. As a result of that, he didn’t make the Spanish team for the just concluded FIFA World Cup. This has made him depressed, he has lost so much confidence to the extent that he didn’t score a single goal in Chelsea’s pre-season games. So, with these it shouldn’t be a surprise when Chelsea are struggling to score goals this season. This is actually my own opinion, but there are some facts in it which cannot be ignored. This is football and anything can happen. Maurizio Sarri may bring revolution and the players may start banging goals more than before. Chelsea’s will kick-start their premier league season with a match away to Huddersfield on Saturday. So let’s relax, and watch what’s going to happen as things goes. |
