Debate: Corrupt Public Officers, too, Deserve Capital Punishment by prosper: 2:36 pm On May 15, 2018 |
You are the main speaker in an inter-school debate. Write your speech for or against the motion: “Corrupt Public Officers, too, Deserve Capital Punishment”. Corrupt Public Officers, Too, Deserve Capital Punishment Good day Mr. chairman, the able panel of incorruptible judges, members of the high table, distinguished guests, the time keeper, my co-debaters, ladies and gentlemen. I stand t his morning, before you to assert the motion which says: “Corrupt public Officers, too, Deserve Capital Punishment.” What is capital punishment? It is the maximum or the greatest punishment meted out for an offence or crime. In this case, it is punishment by death which could be by any means; electrocution, execution by firing squad, hanging, beheading, etc. Other offences or crimes which carry death sentences are not more heinous than acts of corruption among public office holders. So, what is sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander. The corrupt public officers use various methods to defraud you and I Money which is meant for the public use, that is for providing social amenities is diverted to private pockets or accounts. The level of Nigeria’s underdevelopment can easily be traced to these corrupt officials. For instance, there are cases of some projects which have been awarded ten times over, and yet have not been executed. On each occasion, the money marked for such projects end up in these corrupt officers’ accounts. Why would anybody then suggest that they be spared from capital punishment? Moreover, the pen is the ready weapon of the public officers who are known to be corrupt. They use the tool (pen) to change financial figures from hundreds to thousands, to millions and even billions or trillions of Naira, thus enriching them in a fraudulent way. You and I are then left in the cold to suffer unemployment, lack of provision of basic social amenities, abject poverty, diseases, etc. indeed, the agents of these misfortune deserve even more than capital punishment. Money realized by the corrupt public office holders are kept in overseas banks, leaving Nigerian citizens to wallow in abject poverty. I therefore recommend capital punishment to them. Armed robbers most often do not get as much loot as corrupt public officials. Yet, they are executed on arrest and conviction. The ill-gotten wealth gotten wealth of the officials are daily openly displayed on our streets in the form of throwing parties lavishly and riding in posh and luxurious cars which are worth millions of Naira. They constitute the bug sucking the riches of the country at the detriment of the poor majority. With these cogent points of mine, I believe corrupt public office holders deserve death punishment to serve as a deterrent to others who may wish to tread their path. This is my submission.
