WEALTH IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN HEALTH         

I stand before you today to speak against the motion which says “Wealth is more important than health”. What is wealth and what is health?

Wealth is a condition in which a person is richly endowed both materially and financially. To be wealthy means not just being rich but having great property as well. The property could include estates, cars, landed property, etc.

Health is a good physical and mental condition of a person. That is to say that the person that is healthy enjoys mental soundness and physical excellence.

I do not agree that wealth is more important than health for the following reasons:

First of all, health is a necessary condition that gives rise to wealth. Without health, wealth cannot be got or sustained.

Besides, health and wealth are both desirable but health is more important since a wealthy man cannot enjoy his wealth if he is unhealthy. In fact, the wealth can thin out or disappear if he has a chronic sickness which gulps his wealth in the name of medication.

I heard my opponent say that wealth can get or buy anything in this world. This assertion may appear true but there is a limit to which wealth can thrive. A childless parent can, for instance, adopt a child, but this does not mean he/she is the biological parent of the child. It is a common knowledge that the rich also cry. Sorrow and misfortune cannot be averted by wealth.

So, it is evident that health is more important than wealth from the foregoing.

Furthermore, health enables its possessor to be at ease with his creator. If one is at ease with his creator, he will be at peace with Him and be able to serve Him in truth and in spirit. Conversely, a wealthy person, most of the times, thinks about his riches. The Bible has rightly stated that, “Where your riches are, there will your mind be”. This explains the fact that it will be very difficult for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. Is there anybody here present who would want to forfeit his health simply because he desires to be wealthy? Definitely not! Hence, health is more important than wealth.
