3. The Evaluation

#1. Cover Page
The cover page of the book is well designed to suit the content of the novel. A brief look at the cover of the page shows clearly an old soldier carrying a gun. This reminds one that the novel is talking about war. Also the phrase “A novel of Biafran war” written at the bottom of the cover page tells one exactly what the novel is all about.

#2. Setting
Nigeria-Biafra War provides the setting for the novel.

#3. Fictional
The book is a work of fiction . The plot as well as all the characters are imaginary.

#4. Figurative Use of Language

The writer made too much use of figurative language in the writing. Igbo proverbs are commonly encountered in the novel. This may not be good for the non-igbos and could also cause

#5. Language Style

The language style is complex. The author code mixes his language more often than normal

Concluding Comment

As one of Nigeria’s top writers, the author is concerned with the condition of his country. In this novel he tells, with humour, a human story set in the tragedy of the Biafran war. Fatima is fleeing the enemy planes with her young son, and through her unfolding drama, the reader sees what the war was really like through Biafran eyes.
