Your country’s Public Transport system is not functioning properly. Write a letter to the Minister of Transport highlighting the causes and suggesting, at least, two measures to remedy the situation.

ROAD IN NIGERIA

I am writing you this letter as an indigene of Lagos State who has a deep sense of commitment and responsibility to my people and the government at large over their good works. I am thanking you and your colleagues there in the ministry of transport for the good job you are doing in the country with particular reference to various road projects you embarked upon since you assumed office.

Simply put, transportation is the process of moving goods and persons from one place to another. This, in essence, shows the importance of transport in the economy of a nation. The modes of transport as known all over the world include the Land, Air, Rail, Sea, and that of Beasts of burden such as the A*s, Camel, Donkey, and Horses. You will agree with me that goods and services are moved from one place to another through the modes mentioned above.

The irony of these modes of transportation is that the land transportation is the most important because whatever the other means carry would still be taken to the final destination through cars, lorries, motorcycles and even bicycles.

The use of Lorries, Cars, Trailers, and others is very common in all parts of the federation, hence the deplorable conditions of most of the roads in Nigeria today.

First and foremost, we must consider the factors responsible for the poor transport system in the country. In that regard is the high cost of petrol and diesel which makes it inconvenient this day to go about when it comes to the movement of goods and people from one place to the other. This high cost emanates from the incessant fuel scarcity that results from the activities of NNPC  and damage to vehicles resulting from bad roads. These add to the causes of malfunctioning of the transportation systems put in place.

Most of the roads built are in a poor state due to the impact of overloaded trailers. The roads easily give way due to the weight of the vehicles thereby making movement slow and most vehicles get spoilt with the attendant high cost of spare parts to fix them back.

However, the problems can be assuaged with some measures. One of which is the general repair of the roads with proper maintenance culture imbibed by vehicle drivers especially the tanker and trailer (goods) drivers.

Provision of a traffic light to curb excessive speed and bye-laws to sustain the use of the roads should be put in place to check heavy traffic of vehicles that may soon spoil the roads.

Where this is in place, light traffic would ensure smooth movement of people and goods which will, in turn, create more revenue for the government.

In conclusion, I am sure that if you can look into these suggestions, it will aid the transportation system in the country.

Thanks for your insight on the level of poor transport system. Also to me, the responsibilities lies on us first and not the government because we should consider the fact that we citizens are so careless that we don’t use to keep anything that is not ours properly.
